Welcome to Paul Plays

A new editorial corner for retro gaming: what this site is, what it isn't, and what you can expect.

1 min read

This site exists because there are already a thousand retro gaming sites and most of them are bad. Either they're auto-generated lists, or they're enthusiast forums with no ranking, or they're YouTube channels which is the wrong medium for "what's the cap value on the N64's expansion pak modchip."

I'm Paul. I've been collecting and modding retro consoles for twenty-odd years. This is where I'll write things down, slowly and carefully, in long form, with photos.

What you'll find

Six rooms:

  • Consoles: long-form profiles of the hardware. What was inside, what it shipped with, what made it feel the way it did.
  • Games: reviews and notes. Not exhaustive. Not "best of." Just things worth writing about.
  • Accessories: controllers, memory cards, capture devices, and the rest.
  • Mods: hardware mods (RGB, region-free, recapping) and software mods (custom firmware, patches).
  • Guides: how to buy, how to repair, how to mod, how to set up.
  • News: short pieces. This one. Releases, finds, opinions.

What you won't find

  • ROMs, ISOs, or links to either. You'll have to source those yourself.
  • Reviews of new games on retro hardware (someone else's beat).
  • Speedrun strategy.
  • Comments. (For now. Maybe later.)

What's coming

A market for retro hardware classifieds, Australia first. Sellers pay a small flat listing fee, buyers and sellers connect through the platform. Not yet, but soon. That's the bigger thing this site is building toward.

Until then: read, learn, occasionally email me to point out where I'm wrong.
